Bakery On O’Connell: Would you like a view with your pie?
The most faithful Bakery on O’Connell in picturesque North Adelaide.
There are few surprises at the Bakery on O’Connell in leafy North Adelaide, home of the pie floater and Nutella heart—and that’s largely the point.
A proudly South Australian owned and operated family business has been making and baking over 200 products on premises the old fashioned way – with elbow grease.
The family team is dedicated to replicating ancient techniques – traditional recipes, gentle handling of the dough, and baking in a wood oven.
These skills befit head bakers Pistol and Big Bear, who create an array of cakes, pastries, slices and breads which are all handcrafted.
On arrival, a large glossy glass cabinet will tempt you with stacks of sourdough bread and rows of pies of all flavours.
No one is reinventing the wheel here, it’s more about perfecting the technique through generational legacy and skill – consistency is king here and sauce doesn’t cost extra.
Whether it’s a late night snack or an early morning recovery, the bakery is open 24 hour, seven days a week, and has now transcended cult status of old-faithful deliciousness.
And the proof is in the pudding, with annual voting competitions to find the best one, Bakery on O’Connell took out the award for Adelaide’s CBD best bakery in 2021.
Locals swarm to the bakery to bag their favourite slice of life, despite there being a line of customers snaking down the street in summer.
The arrival of the bakery, which has been open for almost 20 years, is among the stalwart enterprises that makes up for what is now a historic precinct in North Adelaide.
Alike the Victorian decorative and cosy homes in surrounding streets, the bakery has the charm of a country cottage – welcoming you home – but is only a short stroll from the heart of the city, Elder Park, River Torrens, Adelaide Oval and St Peter’s Cathedral.
Go and see it all – in vivid colours – what all the fuss was about.
